Dickens came to SBACC as an older kitten in 2008. There, he met his soulmate, a beautiful little black and white kitten named DeeDee. They were adopted together later that year and lived together in a home for six years. When their family moved in 2014, they decided to return both cats to SBACC. They felt that Dickens and DeeDee were so bonded to each other that they had never really bonded to them.
After their return to the shelter, DeeDee remained shy, but Dickens became more and more comfortable with people and welcomed pets and attention. He also became sort of a Big Brother to many of the other cats at the shelter. His laid-back, gentle demeanor seemed to draw them to him, and new arrivals found his presence comforting. Of course, he always remained devoted to his true love, DeeDee. Sadly, we lost DeeDee the year before. Although there is no doubt he missed her, he had many devoted friends at SBACC, both human and feline, to help him through it.
Over the years, Dickens had developed some health issues. He had Diabetes, for which he received two insulin injections a day, and Asthma, which often required some time on an inhaler. Our Dedicated and Compassionate Medical staff took excellent care of him. He handled all of this with his usual calm and was happy and comfortable. All of our cats receive excellent medical care, but the one thing we cannot protect them from is time.
Dickens will never be forgotten and will be loved and missed forever. SBACC’s resident cats never pass from this world alone, and they do not cross the bridge as homeless cats. We are their home and family, and they know how truly loved they are. We know that Dickens and DeeDee are together once again, and indeed, many other old friends were rushing to welcome him. Rest well, sweet boy. We will always love you.
