Utah has tested FIV+. In kittens under 6 months old, a positive FIV test is almost always a "false positive" caused by maternal antibodies passed down from the mother cat through nursing. Because maternal antibodies naturally wear off by 6 months of age, a retest at 6 months is recommended. If the test at 6 months comes back negative, the kitten is completely free of the virus.
If a cat tests positive after 6 months of age, it is considered a true positive. FIV+cats can live completely normal, healthy lives if they are kept indoors, and their life expectancy is not significantly different than that of FIV- cats.
Hi, I’m Utah. My brother, Usher, and I were rescued from the street when we were just two weeks old. We came to SBACC and then went to a foster home to grow big and strong and get ready for our forever homes. I’m very friendly and love to play, eat, and cuddle. I’m a purr monster and love attention and laps. I’m now ready for my forever home, and I think I’ll be ok as an only kitty if I get lots of love and attention. However, I would much rather go home with my brother or another kitten or young cat so that I’ll always have a playmate and cuddle buddy.
