Hi, I’m Belladonna, and I have a long story to tell. I was rescued from someone’s backyard and arrived at SBACC in critical condition, nearly paralyzed—unable to sit, stand, or even lift my head. FIP was initially suspected, but an emergency vet visit revealed that I had a serious lung infection. My treatment began immediately, and I started to get better. I lifted my head, sat up, stood up, and began walking and eating on my own. Then, just days before Christmas, I took a sudden and frightening turn. My breathing became rapid and labored, and I was rushed back to the hospital, where I spent nearly a week on oxygen. Further testing revealed histoplasmosis, a rare fungal infection that often requires months, and sometimes up to a year, of ongoing treatment. To avoid prolonged hospitalization—and to give me the best chance at recovery—SBACC purchased an oxygen chamber so I could safely continue treatment at the shelter. A pet ambulance was required to transport me back to the shelter. I was gradually weaned off oxygen and made a remarkable recovery. I became alert, affectionate, playful, and eager for attention. After four more months of treatment, I was finally declared healthy and cleared to be spayed. I’m now waiting for my forever home. If you’re looking for a young lap kitty who loves to be held and cuddled and demands attention, that’s me.
